Suspend HHS Rule Change

In the midst of a global pandemic when marginalized communities are at a disproportionate risk of potentially deadly outcomes from COVID-19, Donald Trump’s administration is moving to roll back numerous policies that protected trans people and other vulnerable communities from discrimination.

Despite receiving over 130,000 public comments opposing changes, Donald Trump’s HHS is moving quickly to pass a rule change that would dangerously and falsely tell hospitals and health care workers it's okay to discriminate against patients based on their gender or sexual orientation. This, during the greatest public health crisis our country has faced in a century.

That’s why we are calling on the Trump Administration, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to stop playing with people’s lives during this crisis.

Join us as we rise up to demand President Trump to suspend these incredibly harmful rule changes. Not now during this pandemic, not ever.

In the midst of a global pandemic when marginalized communities are at a disproportionate risk of potentially deadly outcomes from COVID-19, our LGBTQ and limited English proficient friends, families, and neighbors should not be facing an attack on their ability to receive quality health care. Publishing a final rule that seeks to weaken protections against discrimination in medical care, during an unprecedented pandemic, is reckless and unconscionable.

This final rule (RIN 0945-AA11), if enacted, would falsely tell hospitals and health plans it's okay to deny medical care to transgender people- even for COVID-19, during a global pandemic.

This rule would also tell hospitals and health plans it's okay not to let patients know they have the right to receive information in their primary language and to file a grievance if they're mistreated.

Every family and every person in our nation deserves the right to life-saving information, testing, and treatment as we navigate this challenging time. That is why we are asking you to suspend this rule change.

COVID-19 virus is disproportionately impacting vulnerable communities like LGBTQ, Black, Latino, and immigrant communities, putting countless lives in danger across the nation.

We should be doing everything we can to provide treatment to whoever needs it, instead this final rule change will only escalate fear and confusion and exacerbate the spread of this deadly disease.

We urge you to please suspend this rule change to the Nondiscrimination in Health and Health Education Programs or Activities. Focus on saving lives, not picking and choosing who gets the care they need.
