It’s happening again. All across our nation there is a stark rise in the introduction and passing of legislation that is very harmful to LGBTQ youth. From sports bans, to healthcare and bathroom restrictions; make no mistake, transgender kids are being relentlessly attacked! This time, right here in our backyard in Louisiana. Senate Bill 44 threatens to ban hard-working students from participating in sports simply because of their gender identity.
Being a kid is hard enough. We should be making it easier, not harder. SB 44 is unfair and would harm trans youth in our community. We will fight for every single Indiana young person who wants to experience the valuable lessons of being on a team with their peers--teamwork, self-discipline, success, and failure.
The time to act is NOW - let your legislators know that they must reject this discriminatory bill that would harm trans youth in our communities.
The letter provided below is a sample template. Please change it to personalize it to your views and concerns. Here are a few key pieces of information you may wish to reference:
Louisiana should not have blanket policies that discriminate against kids and ban them from playing simply because they're transgender. Like any student, transgender youth thrive when they are treated with dignity and respect.
Don’t let a few extremist politicians put trans kids and teens at risk!
Please Oppose SB 44
Dear [Decision Maker],
I'm writing to urge you to oppose SB 44!Kids learn a lot of important lessons in sports: leadership, confidence, self-discipline and self-respect. Transgender kids often face discrimination and bullying, and turn to sports for a sense of belonging. Transgender kids want to participate in team sports for the same reason as other kids--to have fun and be part of a team. SB 44 would force a vulnerable group of young people in Louisiana onto the sidelines. For transgender youth, many of whom experience high rates of depression and suicidality, access to sport can be lifesaving.
