It’s happening again. All across our nation there is a stark rise in the introduction and passing of legislation that is very harmful to LGBTQ youth. From sports bans, to healthcare and bathroom restrictions; make no mistake, transgender kids are being relentlessly attacked! This time, right here in our backyard in Georgia. SB 435 threatens to ban hard-working students from participating in sports simply because of their gender identity.
Being a kid is hard enough. We should be making it easier, not harder. SB 435 is unfair and would harm trans youth in our community. We will fight for every single Georgia young person who wants to experience the valuable lessons of being on a team with their peers--teamwork, self-discipline, success, and failure.
The time to act is NOW - let your legislators know that they must reject this discriminatory bill that will harm trans youth in our communities.
The letter provided below is a sample template. Please change it to personalize it to your views and concerns. Here are a few key pieces of information you may wish to reference:
• Being a kid is hard enough. We should be making it easier, not harder. This bill is unfair and will harm trans youth in our community who just want to experience the valuable lessons of being on a team with their peers--teamwork, self-discipline, success, and failure.• We all know that transgender youth deserve the opportunity to play the sports they love as their authentic selves, just like any other young athlete.• Passing a bill like SB 435 will only embolden other discriminatory laws to be passed across the country, putting LGBTQ people in harm’s way, yet again.
We all know that transgender youth deserve the opportunity to play the sports they love and experience the valuable lessons of being on a team with their peers--teamwork, self-discipline, success, and failure.
Don’t let a few extremist politicians put trans kids and teens at risk!
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose SB 435.
Dear [Decision Maker],
I'm writing to urge you to vote NO to Senate Bill 435! Kids learn a lot of important lessons in sports: leadership, confidence, self-discipline, self-respect, and what it means to be part of a team. SB 435 would force an already vulnerable group of young people in Georgia onto the sidelines. For transgender youth, many of whom experience high rates of depression and suicidality, access to sport can be lifesaving.
